UPDATED: Could iOS 4.3 be coming in two weeks? (Feb 13?)

iOS 4.3 for iPhone, iPad walkthrough Could iOS 4.3 be coming in two weeks, right after the Verizon-sponsored free trial of The Daily runs out and subscriptions kick in? John Gruber of Daring Fireball thinks so. I originally thought Apple might even announced iOS 4.3 today… until iOS 4.3 beta 3 hit yesterday. I thought they’d require it for in-app subscriptions… [...]

Kongregate Arcade returns to the Android Market with some minor changes

After being removed from the Android Market for breaking the rules, the Kongregate Arcade app is back! Yet again can you enjoy easy access to the best source of Flash games on the Web.

Kongregate Arcade was originally pulled because it itself acted as a marketplace for apps -- or at least, it appeared to. In actual fact, the app was just a portal to all of the Flash games on the Kongregate site. The original app hid the browser's address bar (why is this possible?), which made it look like everything was occurring in-app.

The changes to the app make it more obvious that the app simply links to Web pages with Flash games, rather than appearing to play games from within the app. The Arcade will now also use the browser's cache to store temporary Flash files, rather than "explicitly downloading and managing games on the SD card."

A QR code to install the app is after the break.

Desert Moon is an impressive tower defense Time Waster

Desert Moon
If you look at the type of time wasters I normally cover, you'll mostly find physics games, a platformer here and there, and maybe a puzzle or two.

One genre I almost never cover is tower defense games. I guess I normally don't enjoy them all that much - it's purely subjective. But this is one thing that makes Desert Moon all the more remarkable: It's a tower defense game, but I actually had fun playing it.

You're commanding a troop of soldiers stranded on an alien planet for five days. Each day, multiple waves of incoming beasts are going to run at you, and try to get past your defenses. Your job is to place your soldiers before each wave so that their fire pattern (and weapons) effectively cover the surface, and keep the beasts from getting past them.

Once a beast touches one of your soldiers, the soldier dies and there's a gap in your defenses. When enough beasts manage to make it through, you die. Later on in the game, beasts don't have to touch the soldiers - they explode when they're near enough, so you need to start using longer-range weapons to keep the beasts away.

There are six different types of weapons, as well as four types of power-ups you can use during each wave. It's Flash, but it still took a couple of minutes to load on my DSL connection. This is one game you may find yourself spending quite some time with.

Firefox 4 beta 10 now available, fixes 500 bugs and nears completion

Just a few days after the release of beta 9, there is a new build to sink your teeth into. Beta 10 has no new features -- it simply squashes about 500 bugs, thus improving stability across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. The fix that halved Firefox's start-up time sadly didn't make it into the new beta build.

If all goes to plan, beta 11 should be released in the next week, with the first release candidate rolling out in early- or mid-February. Firefox 4 final may actually launch before March!

Again, if you haven't played with Firefox 4 yet, now's the time to give it a go. We even have a guide that walks you through each of Firefox 4's new features.

What are the first applications you install on a new computer?

newcomputer
Setting up a brand-new computer is a mixed blessing: On one hand it's a bit of a hassle, but on the other hand it often feels great to start off with a blank slate. It's a great opportunity to fix all those things that bugged you about the old system, or try out that new file organization scheme you were thinking about.

While apps like Ninite make it easier than ever to download and install a slew of tools all at once, the question still remains: What are your "choice apps"? With a new computer or fresh install in front of you, what are the first few applications you set up on each and every system you use? What apps are so essential to your computing experience that you can't see yourself doing without them? Let us know in the comments!

LibreOffice: Meet the New Office, (Almost) Same as the Old Office

For some Linux adopters, exchanging Microsoft Office in Windows for the OpenOffice suite is a radical change in computing behavior. Swapping out OpenOffice for the LibreOffice suite may be a lot less traumatic. LibreOffice is a near clone of the OpenOffice modules. Yet it provides the potential for more bells and whistles and needs no learning curve to maintain productivity.

LaunchRock, The Most Meta Startup Ever, Builds Viral Launch Pages

In case you needed another "you know there's a bubble when ..." tech post, LaunchRock, a startup that builds viral launch pages for other startups, is launching today via its own product. Inspired by the viral launch pages of Fork.ly and Hipster, the guys behind LaunchRock thought that they could streamline the process of getting users to sign up for startup betas, and built an entire launch page building platform. Co-founder Jameson Detweiler explains that the advantages to system that gives you earlier access to a product as you more friends you invite is that they show you the level of demand and that they build you a list of the most eager candidates. Using this type of page, local Q&A site Hipster brought in over 10K sign ups without mention of what it does.

iPhone headset socket hijacked to power DIY peripherals (video)

Apple's proprietary dock connector may keep would-be peripheral manufacturers at bay , but if you want to build your own iOS companion devices, there's another way. You might have noticed that the Square credit card reader uses Apple's 3.5mm headset jack to transmit power and data at once, and gadgeteers at the University of Michigan are busy open-sourcing the same technique for all the DIY contraptions you can dream of. Project HiJack has already figured out how to pull 7.4 milliwatts out of a 22kHz audio tone, and built a series of prototype boards (including working EKG, temperature, humidity and motion sensors) that transmit data to and from an iOS app at up to 8.82 kbaud -- using just $2.34 worth of electronic components. See the basic principles at work in the video above, and -- as soon as the team updates Google Code -- find out how to build your own at the links below. iPhone headset socket hijacked to power DIY peripherals (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 02:56:00 EDT. Google Maps updated, check-in with Latitude added

Google Maps 5.1  Google maps checkin

Google has updated Google Maps for Android to version 5.1 today, bringing big changes to Latitude.  Where Latitude once was just a pin on a map, now there are check-ins, to connect a place to the location.

Users who opt-in for the new Latitude can set it up to notify them when they are at a location so they can manually check-in, or set up locations to automagically check them in when they arrive.  In either case, Latitude checks you out when you leave.  There are also settings to decide how and where to share your location.  These new features make Latitude much more competitive with other location aware social media, and seem worth checking out if that's your thing.  Grab the official update for Maps through the Android Market.  There's a video after the break that does a great walk through, check it out. Supercomputer unravels structures in DVD materials

Eventhough the storage of films and music on a DVD is part of our digital world, the physical basis of the storage mechanism is not understood in detail. In the current issue of the leading journal Nature Materials, scientists from J?lich, Finland, and Japan provide insight into the read and write processes in a DVD. This knowledge should enable improved storage materials to be developed. (DOI: 10.1038/NMAT2931)........

Facebook to empower its massive mobile platform with HTML5

Facebook, which now has 125 million active iPhone and Android users, will set its focus on the mobile part of its platform this year. CTO Bret Taylor, speaking at the Inside Social Apps conference, said that emphasis will be on HTML5-powered solutions, to maximize impact across all of the smartphone platforms.

Both iOS and Android have Web browsers capable of HTML5. The BlackBerry browser supports some HTML5, and Nokia/Symbian should really have an HTML5-capable browser sometime in 2011. The advantages of developing an HTML5-powered mobile site are clear: not only is there at least 125 million users just waiting to enjoy interactive HTML5 content on their phones, but it would also mean that Facebook could spend its time creating a standards-compliant and cross-platform mobile website, rather than developing individual apps for each of the smartphone platforms.

Don't forget the developers, either: imagine writing an HTML5 app or game that works across every smartphone. It would bring a whole new level of immersion to FarmVille and CityVille players -- you could play it on the train, in the bathroom, or in bed!
