Surfy for Windows Phone 7 is a free, tabbed Web browser

surfy tabbed browser windows phone 7While you wait patiently for Microsoft to deliver Internet Explorer Mobile 9 to your Windows Phone 7 device, you may find yourself wanting for a slightly more feature-filled browser that you can use right now. Surfy is a nice option that's worth checking out, introducing several features you won't find in the stock WP7 browser.

Surfy offers tabbed browsing, a fullscreen mode, and orientation locking so that you don't unexpectedly switch from landscape to portrait viewing. Its address bar provides suggestions as you type, and autocomplete is supported for text input fields.

There's also detailed in-app help provided, and Surfy's developer is keen on adding new user-suggested features -- you can pitch your ideas using the app's feedback system.

Surfy is available for free from the Zune Marketplace.

The GoPano: A Panoramic Lens System For The iPhone

There are quite a few panoramic apps for the iPhone but they all require a steady hand, lots of patience and, most important, you can only take still photos. The GoPano aims to solve that by adding a panoramic mirror to the iPhone's video camera, thereby allowing you to take panoramic video in real time. The GoPano simply snaps onto your iPhone and the included app does the rest. As you record, you can turn the panorama by swiping the screen to shoot what you want as it happens.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe've all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of 'bomb' and 'underage' are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don't agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn't tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat -- it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web -- it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other 'cyberlocker' services.

It's fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed -- the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal -- but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of 'blacklisted' words -- and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Kinect dives into anime cyberspace, dares you to catch cute robot tanks (video)

If your foremost dream is to jack into a dystopian cyberpunk reality where hackers play with human brains (and you also happen to love Japanese anime), you'd best book your flight to Tokyo right now -- a Shibuya department store has set up a basic cyberspace simulator straight out of Ghost in the Shell. That's the film Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. Solid State Society, to be precise, which just got a stereoscopic 3D re-release in Japan this week, and in its honor creative services company Kayac set about constructing a high-quality Kinect hack. Microsoft's depth camera tracks the lean of your body, while the honeyed virtual reality is projected onto a pair of nearby walls, and it's your objective to slap the Tachikoma tank silly without falling over yourself. Get a peek at what it's like to play with in the video above.

Relive the ugly years of the Web with IE6ify bookmarklet

IE6ify versus Microsoft home page
People often forget just how much of a monopolistic juggernaut Microsoft once was: Internet Explorer 6, at its peak in 2004, thanks to its bundling with Windows XP, was used by almost 90% of Web surfers. Then a little miracle happened: Firefox 1 launched and IE has lost market share ever since.

Today, just 12% of Internet surfers still use IE6 -- mostly thanks to China, South Korea and other Asian countries -- and its decline will surely continue until the aging, I-laugh-at-your-standards browser dies a painful and ignoble death.

But, just like the bawdy and animated phosphorescence of Geocities, the misaligned madness of IE6 will always have a special place in our hearts. For most Dot-com Bubble developers, off-by-one-pixel CSS borders and disgustingly convoluted hacks to make IE6 and Firefox look alike were a way of life.

That's why one enterprising developer has created IE6ify, a bookmarklet that processes your current page with the IE6 rendering algorithm -- or its best approximation, anyway. Drop it onto your bookmark bar, head over to your favorite site, and hit the button. Marvel as IE6ify breaks and contorts innocent HTML and CSS until it screams. You might have to hit the button a few times to make the changes more noticeable.

Don't try it on Download Squad, though. Our layout is so awesome -- so standard -- that the bookmarklet hardly does a thing!

SBSettings is a wonderful little jailbreak app that adds tons of quick toggles to your iOS springboard. The one thing I don’t care for in SBSettings is the default theme. It’s just downright ugly. I get tons of questions on whether or not you can theme SBSettings like you can the rest of your springboard. [...]

Vimeo's gratis iOS video editing app punks iMovie in its own house, available now

Still waffling over that bank-shattering $4.99 iMovie purchase? We get it. Thankfully, you've held out long enough for the free market to come and rescue you (again) -- Vimeo has just launched a legitimate alternative into the App Store today with a far, far more luscious price tag: $0.00. The official iOS app checks in at 20.1MB, and offers the ability to upload, manage, edit and watch your videos (as well as those conjured up by others, naturally). It'll handle edits and uploads for both SD and HD footage, and there's even support for pausing / resuming uploads, sharing via your favorite social networking website, and a view to statistics -- if you're into that type of narcissistic thing. The app's up for grabs down in the source link below, and while we're hearing that some folks are hitting upload snags every so often, we're sure the v1.0 build will be refreshed in short order. Oh, and for the iPad and Android contingent? Your copy is en route, but a helping of patience is requested.

Google launches beautiful online magazine Think Quarterly

Think Quarterly, by Google
Who would've thought it: First Netflix dives into the original content foray, and now the ultimate aggregator is also getting in on the action. In a rather weird twist of fate, Google has published the first edition of its new online magazine: Think Quarterly.

Think Quarterly is, in the words of Matt Brittin, Google's UK & Ireland Operations Managing Director, "a breathing space in a busy world. It's a place to take time out and consider what's happening and why it matters." This edition is ostensibly focused on the flow, control and tabulation of data, but it touches on near field communication (NFC) and the magic of viral videos.

The site itself is beautiful. It looks and feels a lot like Google's '20 things...' HTML5 guide, but you have the option of reading individual articles, or flipping through a page-turning Flash magazine applet. The stories themselves are interesting and well-written, too.

In short, Think Quarterly looks and feels like it was intentionally designed and produced to be distinctly un-Google. As Brittin says, it's meant to represent a breathing space in a busy world -- and Google has never exactly been the cautious, analytical type. Perhaps Think Quarterly represents a shift towards a more mature and institutionalized Google -- or perhaps it's just a flight of fancy. We'll have to wait and see.

Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

askdls
Here's one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we're looking for games we can play using both devices.

There's no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It's actually an ideal example, because it's turn-based so you don't necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

[Why am I now humming 'Ebony and Ivory'? -Ed]

Atrix 4G's 4.1.57 update spruces up a few things, patches known root methods

The HSUPA-enabling update? No, not yet. The voice call quality fix? In the pipeline. The mission-critical Bluetooth multimedia experience improvements? Oh yes, we've got those right here! Motorola is preparing to deliver an imminent OTA update to its Atrix 4G super phone, which will fix up battery performance, overall software stability, and car dock, headphone jack, and fingerprint reader performance, but will regrettably leave the two major drawbacks to the AT&T-riding phone untouched. Alas, if you've rooted your Atrix, you'll have to pay a dear price to benefit from these upgrades as users over at xda-developers, who've obtained the pre-release build, report the new 4.1.57 update disables their previous superuser privileges. C'est la vie.

Update: Word is this update will be released to the general public tomorrow. Sit tight.

GroupMe Brings Brands Into The Conversation

As group texting apps like GroupMe gain popularity, people are using them to create ad hoc, private social networks among a handful of friends. But wherever people congregate online or through their mobile phones, brands will want to talk to them. Today, GroupMe is opening up its group chat to brands in what is the first hint at it business model: Featured Groups. Brands can create their own featured groups, which will show up as suggested conversation topics. When you and your friends create a group around those topics, they work like regular GroupMe chats, except you've also opted in to receive messages from the brand. These may include news, offers, marketing messages, or even VIP appearances by celebrities in your GroupMe chat. The first partners to take advantage of the new feature are Oxygen Media, MTV, Bon Jovi, Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and Coachella. Oxygen will be creating suggested topics around its TV shows "Bad Girls Club" and the upcoming Paris Hilton show "The World According To Paris." MTV is using it for "America’s Best Dance Crew."
