iPad 2 Rumors

With the new year approaching very soon more and more rumors are beginning to surface regarding the next generation iPad, or iPad 2. Only time will tell what Apple really has planned. Not all of these rumors have been officially verified by Apple, however around March of 2011 it’s expected that a newly redesigned version [...]

Wifi Analyzer for Android helps you pick the best channel for your Wi-Fi network

WiFi analyzer
Most people rarely think about this, but your Wi-Fi hot-spot is actually broadcasting its signal on something called a channel. In North America, you can pick one of 11 channels; in most of the world you can pick one of 13.

Still, most routers and access points come with a pre-set default (that appears to be 11, at least for the routers around me). When you have several routers broadcasting on the same channel, this can lead to some interference and a performance hit. If you live somewhere fairly isolated and your Wi-Fi signal is the only one in range, you've got nothing to worry about.

On the other hand, if you're trying to survive in a dense urban jungle, surrounded by paper-thin walls and lots of Wi-Fi-using neighbors, you may gain a bit of a performance boost by switching your access point's channel to a less congested one.

Wifi Analyzer is an Android application that helps you figure out exactly what that channel is. The screenshot to the right shows how channels 9 and 10 are occupied by a couple of wireless network fighting over the same frequency, while my network (the red one) lives comfortably on channel 1.

Wifi analyzer offers several views, including a simple "channel rating" screen with no graph, if you just want to quickly figure out what's the best channel for you. A beautiful app, and free. QR code is after the jump.

Adobe revels in first ever billion-dollar quarter

1 (billion) upAdobe, the software giant behind the monstrously-successful Creative Suite, Reader and Flash, has just racked up its first billion-dollar quarter. Up from $757 million in the same period last year, this represents a 33% year-over-year revenue growth, which is pretty damn massive. Over the entire year, Adobe enjoyed a total revenue of $3.8 billion, up from $2.9 billion in 2009.

With all of the negative press over Flash, people often fail to realize just how big Adobe is. If you take a quick look at the Forbes 2010 list of the world's largest software companies, Adobe would place just outside the top 10, with revenues just behind Yahoo! and CA Technologies. This year's excellent performance, whether you like it or not, is almost certainly because of Flash's continued dominance -- and the excellent Creative Suite 5, of course!

This Year, Apple Has Two Fangs To Suck The Blood Out Of CES: iPad 2 And Verizon iPhone

Every year, it seems the buzz starts building around now for CES, the giant consumer electronics expo in Las Vegas. And every year at CES, much of the buzz seems to be around the one company that isn't there ? perhaps the most important consumer electronics company these days: Apple. And this year will be no different. Except that this year, the CES buzz-kill may be more intensified as there are not one, but two key Apple products expected to be announced shortly after the expo: the iPad 2 and the Verizon iPhone.

Adblock Plus for Chrome now available

We told you it was coming soon, but we didn't know precisely how soon: Wadlimir Palant has already pushed the first beta version of Adblock Plus for Google Chrome. It was just four days ago that TechCrunch reported that Palant had changed his mind about never releasing a Chrome port -- citing reasons like not wanting to maintain two unrelated projects and the availability of capable alternatives like AdThwart.

That's all changed, however, and AdThwart has become the foundation of Adblock Plus for Chrome. The first release includes improved filters, updated code to bring the extension more inline with its Firefox cousin, and better XHTML support.

Those of you who already had AdThwart installed should be automatically updated, and new users can install ABP from the Chrome Extensions Gallery.

Trend Micro Browser Guard protects against zero-day critical flaws in Internet Explorer

With so many types of Internet threats to watch out for nowadays, it's important to have a multi-layered defense in place. A good antimalware program is a start, but it won't protect you against everything -- like some zero-day exploits such as the new one reported by Microsoft which affects Internet Explorer.

Trend Micro's Browser Guard offers additional protection for users of Microsoft's Web browser, and best of all it's totally free. Install Browser Guard and it resides in your system tray and integrates into Internet Explorer, where it scans for malicious Web code. Browser Guard taps into Trend's Smart Protection Network, which uses the power of their antimalware cloud to defend against emerging threats. The plug-in won't slow down your browser, but it will add a toolbar (which really isn't necessary). Still, giving up a few pixels of space in exchange for some added protection is a decent trade off if you're a devoted Internet Explorer user.

VirtualBox 4 available for download, adds extension support, disk resizing

VirtualBox 4 has finally exited beta, and it comes bearing tons of updates, improvements, and new features. Among them are truly welcome additions like the ability to re-size both VHD and VDI virtual hard disks, a smoother and more thorough VM deletion process, and support for more than 2GB of memory on 32-bit hosts. There's also an updated set of virtual hardware including the Intel ICH9 chipset and Intel HD audio, and the new scaled display mode makes VMs play nice with your physical displays regardless of their respective resolutions.

The new option to create .vbox shortcuts is a real convenience, as it allows you double-click (or single, depending on your preferences) launching of your favorite VMs. Windows, Linux, and Solaris guests can also now auto-mount shared folders, which makes it easier to access files on your host system.

Oracle has also polished up the VirtualBox UI with improvements such as a sortable VM list. Hit up the changelog for full details about the new release.

MSI reveals mad Sandy Bridge motherboard with eight PCIe slots, eight USB 3.0 ports, and three BIOS chips

Straighten up and salute the Big Bang Marshal, MSI's attempt at redefining the term "overkill." This XL-ATX board packs a total of eight PCI Express lanes (though it only has the bandwidth to simultaneously feed four x16s or eight x8s -- relevant if you're crazy enough to think about using more than four GPUs), three separate BIOS chips, extra 8-pin and 6-pin 12V power intakes, and a thoroughly excessive set of power regulation components. The less extremely minded among you will appreciate having a full array of eight USB 3.0 ports on the back, though we can't get over the measly four DIMM slots on offer. Word is that features might change before the Marshal goes to market in the first quarter of next year, so let's hope more room for your RAM sticks is among the tweaks between now and then.

The Humble Indie Bundle is back, with Braid, Machinarium, and a real-time counter

Humble Indie Bundle #2
The most excellent Humble Indie Bundle is back, and yet again five excellent games are available at any price you choose. This year, Braid, Machinarium, Cortex Command, Osmos and Revenge of the Titans are part of the bundle -- and again, a percentage of every donation goes to the EFF and Child's Play charities. All five games work on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

The site itself has been significantly overhauled, too. At the top, there's a 'buzz bar', showing all of the recent tweets. There's also a real-time counter that ticks up every time a purchase is made -- and I'm glad to say that since I've started writing, it's moved quickly, from 1500 to over 3000!

Most importantly, because you can pay whatever you like for the bundle, there's now a bunch of sliders that control what percentage of your donation goes to each group. You can give all of the money to the game developers, or every last cent to charity -- but the default is a 66/33 split.

The games, if bought separately, would cost around $85... so while you could get all five games for free, consider giving a few dollars at least. If you can't afford one of the five Steam games in our holiday gift guide, the Humble Indie Bundle would make a great gift, too.

New device renders show off the Motorola Cliq 2

Fans of the Motorola Cliq (there are a few, I know it!) now have something to look forward to if you were wondering if there ever would be a second generation of the device. New renders have popped up showing off the Motorola Cliq 2, which is expected to launch at CES with a release shortly after. The device itself doesn't stray too far off from the original when it comes to specs, meaning it's nice but nothing to write home about:

  • Full QWERTY slide out keyboard
  • 5MP camera with LED Flash
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Wi-Fi B/G/N
  • aGPS

It's also been mentioned that Wi-Fi calling may be in the cards as well as a new version of MotoBlur to run it all. No confirmation on what Android OS it will be running, but if we had to take a guess, we'd give it FroYo out the gates with an update possible later. That "Honeycomb" keyboard is rather misleading, we think. [CellPhoneSignal]

WordPress gets Windows Phone 7 app, edit your blog on the go

wordpress
Automattic has officially brought WordPress to Windows Phone 7 for blogging on the go. The WordPress app stays faithful to the general Windows Phone 7 aesthetic of huge typography that goes beyond the current view, and horizontally scrolling screens. But the app isn't really meant for writing epic posts (although you can compose new posts). Like its Android and iOS counterparts, it lets you format text, set categories and tags, and even add pictures to a post. You can then publish your post on the spot, or save it for editing later when you're sitting at an actual computer.

More useful, perhaps, is the WordPress app's ability to moderate comments on-the-go. The app lets you bulk-edit comments, so you can de-spam your blog in one fell swoop from the road.

Last but not least, if your blog is hosted on WordPress.com, the new app lets you monitor a host of stats such as Views, Post Views, Clicks and more. All in all, this looks like a must-have for any WordPress blogger who also sports a Windows Phone 7 device. Jump on over to WordPress.org for the full details or download the app here [Zune link].

Official Kinect drivers now available for Windows and Ubuntu

kinect
If the recent demonstrations of the Kinect's potential have you all hot and bothered, brace yourself: official drivers are now available for both Windows and Ubuntu. It's all thanks to the OpenNI (Natural Interaction) initiative, where PrimeSense -- the company behind the Kinect -- happens to be one of the founding members.

OpenNI aims "to accelerate the introduction of Natural Interaction applications into the marketplace," and releasing drivers is a good first step. Binaries for 32-bit Windows and both 32 and 64-bit Ubuntu systems are available for download and source code is also available. There's also a full OpenNI user guide in PDF format.

Here's hoping driver availability leads something more than slick demos -- we'd love to actually be able to control our desktops this way.

Freemake Video Converter adds Blu-Ray support, Web video downloading

Freemake's free Video Converter was already a very solid app, handling more than 200 import formats and able to output converted videos for playback on a wide array of devices. In the recently-released version 2.0, however, one major piece of missing functionality has been added.

Freemake 2 now supports Blu-Ray burning, allowing you to output dozens of hours of downloaded video to a single disc. If you don't have a Blu-Ray burner, no worries -- Freemake claims their media conversion kung-fu lets them cram 20 hours onto a single-layer DVD.

The upgrade doesn't stop there, however. Freemake 2 also adds the ability to download and convert videos directly from popular sharing sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Metacafe. Beyond sharing sites, Freemake can also grab video from Hulu, South Park Studios, The Daily Show, Megavideo, and several others -- including a good number of sites in the red light district. There's also a more full-featured preset editor, giving you advanced control over your default conversion settings.

The .Net 4.0 framework is required, but Freemake will install it for you if it's not already on your system.

NoiseES will play both NSF and NSFE audio formats, which means you can listen to the music (and sound effects) from almost every NES game made. Once you've downloaded them (just a few kilobytes!) you can use iTunes File Sharing to transfer them to your iOS device.

Don't worry if you end up transferring hundreds of soundtracks, either; NoiseES lets you search through your music, or browse by various categories. For those that really like the Mario theme tune, it has an 'infinite repeat' mode, too...

Google search now warns you of hacked and compromised sites

Google search results show compromised sites
Emerging just a week after the high-profile Gawker Media hack, and proving it is still very fleet-footed indeed, Google search results now warn you if a website has been hacked. The notification (see screenshot above) looks just like the malware warning.

Unlike the malware warning, however, you do not get shown the ominous 'visiting this site may harm your computer!' interstitial page. Rather, you are free to click through to the site as usual. Perhaps Google's hack-detection code isn't quite finished, or it is still fine-tuning the process. The only actual change, then, is the addition of the "This site may be compromised" link, which links to a page in the Google Help Center.

The coolest bit, though, is for the owners of websites. If you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools, Google will automatically notify you if your site has been compromised. Google has even produced a guide for cleaning up a hacked site -- cool!

Adblock Plus for Chrome coming soon

AdBlock Plus
Adblock is already available for Chrome, and is working very well for us so far. But now Adblock Plus, of Firefox fame, may be joining making the jump to Google's browser platform.

AdBlock Plus' developer, Wladimir Palant, has had lots of time to convert the extension; after all, Chrome isn't exactly new. But so far, Palant has been reluctant to do the porting, due to the amount of work required and Chrome's limited blocking capabilities. Times have changed however, as according to TechCrunch, Adblock Plus is on its way. It won't be a complete re-write apparently, but based on an existing extension called AdThwart.

From an end user's point of view, having Adblock Plus for Chrome might not make a huge difference. After all, the existing options for Chrome do get the job done. But when you step back and look at the big picture, this is one more indication of the rapid rise of Chrome as a browser platform, and now, an OS.

Firefox 4 beta 3 for Android hands on: Mozilla browser hits the Market

Mozilla has released a new beta of Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo to keep the mobile browser in step with its desktop cousin, and it packs a number of important improvements. Perhaps the most noticeable one on Android is that you can now find Firefox in the Market, meaning future updates will be a smoother process -- just make sure you uninstall any previous beta versions before downloading from the Market.

So what's new in Firefox 4 beta 3?
  • Improved support for both software and hardware keyboards
  • Android-style menus
  • Better integration with other apps when opening a link
  • A save page-as-PDF option
  • Improved Firefox Sync with new 'add a device' feature
  • Full screen video and improved audio support
  • Copy and paste support in the URL bar
  • Developer access to a localStorage API and orientation events
After browsing for a while with beta 3, I'm definitely left feeling it's faster than the previous non-Market release. Some pages, however, still load about 30-40% slower than they do in Dolphin Mini (my current browser of choice). The new features are definitely key additions -- especially basics like keyboard support and copy/paste in the URL bar. Firefox Sync setup is an absolute breeze now, thanks to the 'add a device' option in both the desktop and mobile versions.

Firefox 4 is also a bit of a space hog, currently consuming about 21MB -- ten times more than Dolphin Mini. And while I dig the desktop-to-mobile Firefox 4 synchronicity, I'm not sure it's enough to make me switch just yet. If I start doing more mobile surfing (which would make Sync more useful to me) and Mozilla kicks up the speed and trims a little fat, Firefox 4 will definitely be a strong contender for the coveted default browser crown.

Check out the gallery, or if you want to jump right in, use the QR code after the break. For more information, release notes and troubleshooting tips, check the Firefox Beta for Mobile website.
