Motorola DROID Pro Review

Introduction: Motorola DROID Pro . The name just sounds intimidating and serious. The iPhone captured the market by being fun and approachable, and Google took that a step further with Android by opening up the platform, making it customized and personal. But when you add ?pro? to something you?re not messing around, and that?s exactly what Motorola is doing with their latest ...

Lineo's Warp 2 boots to Fedora on Atom in 4 seconds, MPC Data's SwiftBoot warms up embedded Linux in an instant

Alright, you caught us. We're suckers for speedy, unrealistically optimized boot times. The fine folks at Linux for Devices just highlighted two major players on the horizon: Lineo's Warp 2, which is about to launch; and MPC Data's SwiftBoot, which is now available. Both of them are less of a "boot" and more of a "wake from hibernation" sort of thing, but most of the issues are the same -- you still have to boot a kernel, whether or not you're gonna populate the system with a saved state when it's ready. Lineo is booting up Fedora Linux 12 on an Atom Z530 machine, and has just hit the 4.06 second mark -- compared to a 54.72 second "normal" boot time on the system. Meanwhile, MPC Data is going after much more of a niche, but doing it well: its SwiftBoot tech can get Linux up and running an actual application on an embedded device-ready Renesas SuperH SH7724 processor in under a second (0.982 seconds, to be precise). This one has to be seen to be believed, so check out the video after the break. Sure, it won't help you love your pokey PC or Mac any more (though Apple's doing its own work on this problem with its misnomered "instant on" feature on the MacBook Air, which wakes the computer from hibernation in a few seconds), but it's a nice glimpse of what's to come.

Malwarebytes 1.5 detects and cleans more malware faster than ever

Malwarebytes is one of the most trusted and effective tools for removing all kinds of malicious software. Over at the Malwarebytes forums, there's big news today: MBAM 1.5 has been released, and it's faster, smarter, and better than ever. Startup time has been trimmed to just a few seconds and scanning speed improved by as much as 500%. There's also a host of new detection algorithms which allow MBAM to better detect all the frustrating, shifty malware floating around cyberspace.

Users can now manually add files and folders to the Malwarebytes ignore list, too. If you own the pro version, you'll get enhanced command line tools, a smarter, faster "Flash scan" which takes as little as 10 seconds to complete, and one-touch automatic updating.

Bush Proves Surprisingly Tech-Savvy in Zuckerberg Chat

It would be natural to assume that George W. Bush and Mark Zuckerberg have nothing in common. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, is a Baby Boomer, while Zuckerberg, the founder and chief executive officer of Facebook, is a member of the millennial generation. Those facts alone suggest this pair should be participants in a culture war that's currently being waged.

Hacked Microsoft Kinect trained to recognize objects

Object recognition with OpenKinect
With the release of OpenKinect, an open-source library that lets PC users interact with Microsoft's depth-sensing and environment-recognizing Kinect, crazy-cool applications of the technology are beginning to emerge. In this video (embedded after the break), one creative hacker mashes together a bunch of open-source libraries to create... well, a modern-day equivalent of HAL 9000.

Using OpenKinect as an interface, OpenCV to process the captured images, CMU Sphinx to recognize speech and Festvox to synthesize speech, one hacker was able to create a program that recognizes random real-world objects and communicates with a user in real time. He notes in the video's description that it's just a 'proof of concept', but one wonders how long it actually took him to cobble it together because the video was uploaded only a few days after OpenKinect's release.

The most exciting prospect though, in my opinion, is that Microsoft must surely be working on their own in-house tools (and games!) to better utilize Kinect's potential. The cocky work of lone cowboy coders is one thing, but next-generation interfaces from powerhouses like Microsoft are something else.

A week with AOL's new Project Phoenix mail

AOL Project Phoenix Email
As a someone who's been using Gmail since the invites actually meant something, I've become quite comfortable with my inbox. While it's not the most widely-used webmail app around, Gmail has set the bar for geeky features pretty high -- and those features are what keep me coming back. So how does AOL's newly revamped mail app (codenamed Project Phoenix) stack up? I was pleasantly surprised.

Yes, AOL is Download Squad's parent company -- but that doesn't mean I'm going to automatically love every app they develop. Phoenix, however, is really good. It's got a few features that I wish Gmail offered -- like a tabbed interface, quick compose (more on this later), a look reminiscent of native desktop apps, and integrated social network updating via Lifestream. It's also dead simple to connect accounts from other services such as Gmail and Windows Live.

High-speed camera in motion can stop a commuter's heart

By now, you're certainly familiar with the magic that a consumer-branded Casio super-slow-mo camera can do with motion, right? But what happens when you use a two-year old Casio Exilim FH20 to shoot 210fps footage (played back at 30fps) from a moving train? Nothing, at least until the train slows down.

Facebook Messages: combine all of your inboxes and IM clients into one, unlimited storage service

It's more like instant messaging than email -- more like a conversation than a threaded email conversation. Yes, every communication that goes through the Facebook messaging platform will create a conversation history. Much like Google Wave, actually.

The idea is that you will push every digital communication through Facebook, and thus everything can be logged -- every message has a context. If you email and SMS your significant other, both those messages will appear in order, in the conversation history.

Facebook has invested in lots of shiny new infrastructure that builds upon their existing technologies -- they're ready for the swell of traffic that the email instant messaging will generate. Lots of protocols are supported, too, like XMPP and Jabber -- and IMAP support is planned.

The 'social inbox' feature sounds a lot like a hyper-intelligent 'Priority Inbox' system. By default, email (or any communication) from your friends or friends-of-friends will appear at the top of your inbox, followed by everyone else. You can also automatically bounce anyone that isn't a friend; awesome! You can of course make it so non-Facebook friends appear at the top of your inbox too.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO, closed with (roughly) these words. "This is not an email killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as one part of it. We don't want people to shut down their Yahoo or Gmail account. People are shifting towards more and more simple communication -- if we do a good job, we think more people will engage in IM [on Facebook's new platform]. If we do a good job at that, maybe one day, two years out, people will say that instant messaging, not email, is the way forward."

Update:
  • There's no content filtering (no rules)
  • Incoming mail from people that don't use Facebook will automatically hit your normal, 'non-priority' inbox
  • You can move friends down the priority list, and move 'external' non-Facebook friends up
  • Message forwarding will be possible
  • Unlimited storage! Or at least, no explicit cap on how much data you can store
  • There's a video after the break that demonstrates the new Messages product

Verizon Accidentally Posts iPhone Interface On Droid X Advert

Verizon Accidentally Posts iPhone Interface On Droid X Advert

This is probably an honest mistake, but with all the Verizon iPhone rumors going around, you can't do anything but chuckle at this. We're talking about a Verizon advert that features the Droid X, which is a nice phone, just that the device is pictured using an iPhone interface. Considering how high profile both devices are and the fact that the iPhone is a major competitor for Verizon's devices at the moment, it's probably a bad boo boo.

With A New Local Discovery Engine, WHERE Wants To Own The ?Pre Check-in? Experience

We've all been there before: You've just moved to a new city, the fridge is empty, and you need some grub. You pop into the nearest restaurant and.. it's not bad. So you start branching out. You check out spots a few more blocks from home. Within a few weeks, you find comfort in your favorite spots, and fall into a bit of a rut; two months in and surrounded by new restaurants to try, you're hitting up the same 4 restaurants every week. WHERE wants to bust that habit. Today, they're introducing a new Local Discovery system, which they're hoping will help them own what they call the "Pre Check-in" space.

New Web Store icon appears in Google Chrome

We're sure hoping the Chrome Web Store is nearing launch readiness -- previous launch dates have come and gone, and all we've seen so far are presentation slides. Progress continues, however, and you may have spotted another subtle change on your Chromium or Chome's new tab page. The original multi-colored hexagon has been replaced with a more logical icon: a Chrome-colored shopping bag. So far, we've only heard reports of the change appearing in Chromium builds on Linux.

So, how about it, Google? Will we be able to take our browser out for a little Christmas shopping, or is the Web Store on hold until Chrome OS launches "in the coming months?"

Thanks, Terrence!

Microsoft Files for Patent on Touchy-Feely Screens

Microsoft has filed a patent application for a display screen that would dynamically give users the feeling of pushing buttons when they touch it. It filed patent application 20100295820 last week. The patent's for a "light-induced shape-memory polymer display screen" that would give users the sensation of actually touching buttons as they're displayed on a touchscreen.

Netflix launches $7.99 streaming-only plan, increases price of DVD plan

Netflix plansAfter a trial back in October, Netflix has now announced its $7.99/month streaming-only plan. This matches the Hulu Plus price drop from last week. Of course, both services have different libraries of TV shows and movies -- and Hulu Plus still has ads!

The new plan is targeted squarely at the growing army of those that find physical media a thing of the past. Still, a difference of just $2 is a small price to pay for the option of unlimited DVDs.

In other news, Netflix has increased the price of its DVD-loaning plans, presumably to cover the growth of its streaming service. One-DVD-at-a-time now costs a dollar more ($9.99), with larger plans increasing by a similar percentage.

The only-two-DVDs-a-month plan price remains unchanged.

Small Vibration-driven Generator Could Replace Button Batteries

Small Vibration-driven Generator Could Replace Button Batteries

A Japanese university researcher has come up with a small vibration-powered generator that measures in at 2 x 3 x 12mm only and is capable of churning out 1.56mW of power with a vibration of 357Hz. According to him, the energy density is high enough to replace a button battery. The energy density of this generator is about 22mW/cm3, which is roughly 20 times higher than the energy density of a normal small vibration-driven generator. If this means that we won't have to fuss about replacing the batteries in certain devices in the future, we're certainly looking forward to this.
