Songbird app for Android goes beta, we go hands-on

Using Songbird on your desktop or laptop to listen to your cavernous collection of digital music? Good news -- the Songbird team has been working in "super seekrit" (their words, not ours) on bringing you a pocket-sized version for your Android device. Even better, they've announced the availability of the first public beta of Songbird for Android -- and we took it for a spin.

Here's the quick version: Songbird looks nice, and it's got a good set of basic features. It's got a good built-in search and allows you to browse your library by artist, album, song, genre, or playlist. As you peruse your collection, the now playing pane hides itself behind Songbird's playback controls. Tap and drag the tab to slide it into view, and you can swipe through a Flickr-powered photostream or like the track on Facebook.

Want to control your Songbird queue from your homescreen? Like all good Android music players, there's a widget which allows you to do just that.

Swype vs. SlideIT: Battle of the Android keyboard swipers

SlideIT vs. Swype
When you've got an itty-bitty touch-screen and need to pound out a quick email, the last thing you're going to want to do is type. I mean, tapping out a text message is fine every now and then, but when you're forced to type more than a couple of lines when you're on the go, sliding is definitely the way to go.

Sliding keyboards utilize the fact that each word, as it is typed, tends to create a unique pattern across the keyboard. So rather than tap-tap-tap, you just touch the screen and drag across the keys you wish to type on. The keyboard then uses the resulting squiggle to figure out what it is you were trying to type.

So far, so good. In theory it sounds great, but in real life things aren't always so silky-smooth. For example, what happens when you need to type a word the keyboard doesn't know, such as a name? Or when there's more than one possible interpretation for the squiggle you just drew?

That's where the differences between different sliding keyboards come into play. In this review I'll be focusing on the two best-known products: Swype and SlideIT. Continue reading after the fold to find out which one is better!

DonationCoder posts results of yearly NANY Event, great new applications

nany
Who doesn't like quality free software? DonationCoder.com is one of our favorite resources for great utilities. You get the software for free, but you're encouraged to donate if you use it and enjoy it.

Ever since 2007, DonationCoder has been running a yearly event called NANY, which stands for New Apps for the New Year.

This year, over 30 different entries have been made, each with its own video screencast. Here are some of the gems you can find on the NANY page:
  • Quick Cliq: A fast launcher utility that lets you create links to folders, files, programs, URLs and more. It also provides window management, clipboard manipulation and more.
  • TaskDaddy: An application for automating MS Outlook task creation. You give it a single line of input, and it turns it into a complete Outlook task without you having to open Outlook.
  • DCDisplay: A comic/magazine viewer, inspired by CDisplay.
As you can see, these are fairly purpose-specific applications, but there are many, each with its own video. Hop on over to the NANY page and see if you can find something you like!

Amazon to buy out European movie rental and streaming service LoveFilm

After merging its DVD rental business with LoveFilm in 2008, Amazon has now agreed to buy all of the remaining shares for $312 million. Pending regulatory approval, the deal will complete in the first quarter of 2011.

LoveFilm, with extensive distribution rights in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, is usually referred to as the 'Netflix of Europe,' and this purchase is obviously intended to give Amazon a strong entry into the European DVD rental and online streaming market. Amazon is hoping that LoveFilm's entrenchment will be enough to beat out Netflix, which after conquering America must surely have its sights set on Europe.

Zeam hands on: a lightweight and minimalist Android launcher

Zeam robotIt's always amazed me how phones, with processors that are hundreds of times more powerful than early computers, can lag. You know what I mean: head into your address book and try to find a contact while your phone is still booting up, or loading a website. It's pathetic, really. One solution is to put faster and faster CPUs in phones, but the alternative is to strip out some of the heavier elements and replace them with light-weight, faster alternatives -- like Zeam Launcher.

Zeam switches out your home screen and apps list with minimalistic, snappier replacements. It supports Live Wallpapers, and rather excitingly opens up programmable bindings swipe up, swipe down and double tap. With Zeam, you'll never have to hit the 'home' button -- just swipe down!

Google adds 35 more Web fonts to Blogger

Web fonts have been available to Blogger users since late last year, when Google introduced 32 ready-to-use typefaces to spice up your blog's design. Now, Google has more than doubled that number -- bringing the total to a whopping 77 fonts, all of which render nicely in just about any Web browser. No, they don't work in IE6.

You'll find the new fonts in the Blogger Template Designer behind the advanced tab. Choose a font, and Blogger will give you a preview to help you decide whether or not you want to make the switch. The full list of available fonts is posted here, and you can also browse them in the Google Font Directory.

DownThemAll 2 download manager released, now supports Firefox 4

The popular Firefox download manager DownThemAll has finally hit version 2.0, and the new release brings a number of important changes. Not least among them is out-of-the-box support for Firefox 4, which is currently slated for a February 2011 release.

DownThemAll 2 offers even greater control over your Firefox downloads than its predecessor. Speed limits can be specified on a per-server or download basis, and you can set a global limit as well. There's also a media-sniffing feature which allows for easy downloading of embedded video clips on the sites you browse -- even HTML5 <audio> and <video> tags are supported. DTA2 even plays nice with Firefox 4's private browsing mode!

Sound Recording USB Flash Drive Has Me Suspiciously Eyeing A Mountain Of CES Press Kits

Adobe initiative to let you easily clear 'Flash cookies' from your Mozilla or Google Web browser

In a strong, head-held-high missive, Adobe has detailed a new initiative to bring Flash local storage clearing to Web browser UIs. The new API, NPAPI ClearSiteData will let Firefox and Chrome users clear Flash's Local Shared Objects, or 'Flash cookies,' in the same way that you currently clear cookies and temporary Internet files.

LSOs are very commonly used throughout the Web, but unlike conventional cookies they're a little harder to delete. A lot of websites use them to track you across the Web, but they're also used by sites like YouTube to store your video preferences.

The thing is, you've always been able to delete these LSOs, it's just a bit of a pain in the ass. You have to visit the Flash Global Storage Settings Panel -- and honestly, how many of you knew that? The difficulty of deleting LSOs led to the creation of evercookie, which is likely the main reason behind this new effort from Adobe.

As for when the new API will be rolled out, Chrome Dev will be the first, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. There's no word of when it will be implemented in Firefox, but presumably it will be after the launch of Firefox 4. Opera and Internet Explorer -- who knows!

Daimler and BYD's GOLF electric car getting closer to completion?

Daimler and BYD's GOLF electric car getting closer to completion?
Daimler AG is of course best known as the producer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, cars that usually sit toward the higher end of their respective classes. BYD, on the other hand, makes batteries, cellphones, and inexpensive cars that often look an awful, awful lot like other, rather more expensive ones. Strange bedfellows, these, but according to a "knowledgeable individual" quoted by The Wall Street Journal the two are getting closer to finalizing plans for an electric vehicle, freezing the design ahead of production to begin toward the end of 2012. The car is said to be called the GOLF, standing for Green, Oxygen, Light, and Friendship -- though that L could also double for Lawsuit given VW already sells its Golf in China. This partnership is similar to what BMW is doing, working with Brilliance China Automotive to get a foothold into the potentially Chinese EV market, which is already starting to heat up and should only continue to do so over the coming years.

Kindle lands in Mac App Store, iOS app updated

Kindle on the Mac App StoreSignaling what is hopefully the beginning of major adoption of app stores by big-name developers, the Kindle e-book reader is now available from the Mac App Store. It's free to download, and seemingly the same version that you could previously download direct from Amazon.

In other news, the Kindle for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch app has also been updated. It now supports the background downloading of books, on devices with iOS4; and you can finally access public domain books from Project Gutenberg and other similar resources.

With Amazon now on board, a huge question mark still lingers over developers like Adobe and Microsoft. Will we see Office for Mac or Adobe Photoshop in the Mac App Store? Will the 30% revenue cut scare them off? Real-world publishing, with disc pressing, boxing, distribution, advertising and obtaining shelf space costs more than 30%!

Let's not forget Steam, either. Developers and publishers weren't overly comfortable with Valve's digital distribution service, either; but look how it's turned out!

Scientists build double-floating-gate FET, believe it could revolutionize computer memory

Look, we get it, you want DRAM that behaves like flash, flash that behaves like DRAM, and everything in between -- speedy computer memory that doesn't lose its data when the power goes off, and lasts for years on end. Well, it looks there's a new challenger about to enter that ring -- double floating-gate field effect transistors, currently in prototype form at North Carolina State University. Whereas the single floating-gate variety is currently responsible for the flash memory in your USB keys and SSDs, the second floating gate lets bits of data stay in an active, ready state, but the computer can also apply a higher voltage to "freeze" them in place. Since the memory can switch between static and dynamic modes in a single cycle and the data never disappears in between, researchers imagine the new tech could lead to instant-on computers and power-saving techniques that shut down idle memory banks. That's the consumer take, at least -- find the technical deep dive at our more coverage link.
