drag2up for Chrome brings drag-and-drop uploading to the whole Web

drag2up

One of my favorite Gmail features is the ability to drag-and-drop attachments onto email messages. That's so cool! There's no more browsing for files - the whole thing feels much more like a desktop app.

drag2up is a Chrome add-on that aspires to bring that same functionality to the whole Web. It's super-cool - when it works. I've selected the screenshot above for that exact reason. The imgur.com link is the result of a successful upload attempt. I dragged an image onto a text area, and drag2up uploaded it to imgur.com in the background, and then it populated the text area with the URL of the image. It even wrapped it in forum-friendly [img] tags for me.

The second line (the one starting with Error) is what happened when I tried uploading a ZIP file. No joy, but I guess that might be resolved in time.

When I tried using drag2up with another edit control (CKEditor running in a heavily-customized environment), it couldn't even modify the text shown in the control. But it did work with a simple text area control.

Bottom line: It's really, really cool, when it works. Let's hope it'll gradually start working with more and more files and editors.

Glee Themed Magic 8 Ball

By Andrew Liszewski
While Glee has gotten a bit more dramatic this season, I don’t think anyone should ever take it too seriously. At least not seriously enough to listen to advice from a talking/singing over-sized billiard ball. Now I’ve seen ‘themed’ versions of the Magic 8 Ball before, but never to the extent that something [...]

5 Questions to Ask IT Before a Project Kicks Off

It's often useful to interview customers to understand their perspectives about their suppliers. In these discussions, open-ended questions about supplier "success stories" and "horror stories" can prompt enlightening replies. Answers in the latter category invariably connect to some supplier failure to deliver, an implementation problem that had implications for the customer's business. And a surprising number of these problems were traced by the customer to some change in the supplier's IT and business systems that rippled through to impact on the customer organization.

Sonic All Adapter Grants Sonic Cleaning Capabilities To Any Toothbrush

So I like the idea behind this Sonic All device which lets you turn any manual toothbrush into a vibrating, super-cleaning machine. Web Seer lets you visually compare Google Autocomplete results

webseer

I find Google's Autocomplete (or "suggest") feature very interesting because it seems to have spawned a quite a few by-products. Web Seer is a nice example. You feed it with a couple of prefixes, and it polls Google for all of the suggestions for them and then spews out a simple visual representation.

The screenshot above shows a snippet of the output for "should they" versus "will my cat." Perhaps that's not the best example because these two searches aren't fully comparable; when I tried "can he be" versus "can she be," I got some more comparable results, such as "be so cold" for the guys and "be so heartless" for the girls (ouch!).

It's a Flash app, so if you happen to be taking part in the crusade against Flash, it won't work. But on the bright side, where it does work, it's very fast. There's no Submit button or anything like that - it's completely live and on-the-fly, with the graphic updating right as you type.

3 FOSS PIM Apps, 3 Personality Quirks

New app choices have a habit of getting in the way of older favorites. Sometimes, a new approach or design can tempt you to give up one approach to solving a computing need by replacing it with another. That is the case with personal information manager apps. Open source software gives us Linux users lots of redundancy and choices. Applications in the PIM category are no exceptions.

Blosics 2 Level Pack is an awesome user-generated Time Waster

blosics2levelpack

When Lee reviewed the original Blosics time-waster back in 2009, he concluded the review with the words "I just wish there were more levels, but I'll be heading back for another round."

Well, it seems like Lee's wish has been granted, with the Blosics 2 Level Pack. Gameplay is exactly like the original: You shoot cannon balls out of a certain area of the screen, trying to make a tower of bricks topple. When the bricks fall into the abyss you gain points, but every ball you shoot also costs you points. You also have four different balls sizes - the larger the ball, the more expensive (and powerful) it is. It comes down to figuring the most effective trajectory and tactic for toppling the tower.

The are 30 user-generated levels, and it's very addictive. I made it all the way to level 15 before the need to perform some actual work caught up with me. Very engaging.

XM, Sirius finally announce plans to merge in Canada

Ready to have your mind blown? XM and Sirius never merged in Canada. Even after the two companies joined forces in the United States, they continued to operate as separate entities north of the border, with XM Canada wholly owned by Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings, while Sirius Canada operated through a partnership of CBC Radio, Slaight Communications, and Sirius XM in the US. That's now finally set to change, however, with the two companies today announcing plans to merge in an all-stock deal valued at $520 million (including $120 million in long-term debt). Assuming the deal is approved by the CRTC, the combined company would boast a total user base of 1.7 million, and Canadian Satellite Radio chairman John Bitove promises that the new entity will deliver an "exceptional value to subscribers."

Pagani, Mercedes say V12 bound for C9 isn?t shared

Filed under: Mercedes-Benz Pagani C9 spy pics - Click above for high-res image gallery For reasons unclear, Mercedes and Pagani both felt the need to quash increasing speculation that the V12 in the coming Pagani C9 has anything to do with the V12 in the SL65 AMG Black Series. AMG is developing the motor for Pagani's next supercar, and Road & Track and Autocar had both said the Pagani engine was an evolution of a mill from Mercedes. The twin-turbo V12 in the Black Series was rated at 670 horsepower and 730 pound-feet - itself a massaged and tuned version of the motor in the standard SL65 AMG

Wax-on Concept Wax Printer

Wax-on Concept Wax Printer

The Wax-on solid ink printer looks like a printer sent back from the future. The concept printer removes the need for creating plastic waste associated with the use of (the dreaded) ink cartridges. The design of the printer itself is minimal and offers a vertical orientation to ensure that it doesn't take up too much desktop real estate. The printer allows the wax cartridges to be easily seen at the top, and extra cartridges can be inserted from the bottom. Aside from functionality, you have to admit that this printer would look awesome on any modern desktop.

DIY Timelapse Circuit For Point-and-shoot Cameras

DIY Timelapse Circuit For Point-and-shoot Cameras

Many expensive cameras offer a remote shutter release feature, but most point-and-shoot cameras don't. Of course, if you have good DIY skills, you can probably fix that, and that's what someone out there decided to do, hacking together some hardware, adding the ability to turn the camera on, shoot a picture, and turn the camera back off. The hardware added allowed for additional capabilities such as changing the length of time between shots and automatically shutting down when it gets too dark to continue shooting. The schematics and the board layouts have been posted online, in case you're planning on recreating this during your free time this weekend.

Facebook beta app for webOS gets Places support

HP Palm's webOS crew continues to churn out useful updates to their software, and this one is kind of a biggie if you're into social networking and check-ins. Today's update to the Facebook beta app brings Places support to Pre and Pixi owners.

To check in, simply tap the menu button in the app's top-right corner and then tap the Places icon. Nearby locations will be displayed, and you can then tap Check In to post your location to Facebook.

Places support is only available in the beta app right now, so here's hoping the new version gets rolled to all webOS Facebook users soon. It's a big improvement and has a lot of nice additional functionality.

Nokia Expands Management Team With A CMO: Verizon Vet Jerri DeVard

Nokia has appointed Jerri DeVard as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, a new role that comes into effect as of January 1, 2011. DeVard is a 25-year marketing vet, with relevant experience in the telecom industry - she served as Senior Vice President for Marketing and Brand Management at Verizon from 2003 to 2007. DeVard started her own marketing consultancy agency, called DeVard Marketing Group and based in New York. As a Principal at the firm, she provided counsel to Microsoft, among other consumer-focused companies. I mention that, of course, because Nokia's new CEO, Stephen Elop, hails from the Redmond software company.
